Summer is made for adventures with your pup — but rising temps bring a not-so-fun risk: burned paws. As a groomer who adores big dogs, anxious pups, and breed-specific care, I see it every year. The good news? Burned paws are preventable with a little know-how and TLC.
🔥 Hot Paws? No Thanks!
Asphalt can get dangerously hot in summer. On a 30°C day, pavement can soar past 55°C — hot enough to burn skin in seconds. If you can’t keep the back of your hand on it for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s feet.
Signs of burned paws:
Limping or avoiding walks
Redness, swelling, or blisters
Licking or chewing their feet
🛡 Prevent Paw Burn
Walk in early mornings or evenings
Stick to grass or shady paths
Use paw-protecting booties for extreme heat
🧼 Keep Paws Clean & Moisturized
Dust, dirt, and allergens can cause irritation. Keep paw pads clean, hair trimmed between toes, and nails short — all included in our nail clipping & pad trim service.
Cracked pads? A dog-safe balm keeps them hydrated and healthy. Skip human lotions — they can be toxic to dogs.
🛁 Safe Shampoo vs. Human Shampoo
Your shampoo is for you — not your dog.The pH Factor: Dogs’ skin is around pH 7.5, ours is closer to 5.5. Human shampoo strips oils, causing dryness and irritation. Watch for: sulfates, artificial fragrances, and parabens.
Signs of a reaction: scratching, redness, dandruff, hot spots.
Groomer Tip: Choose a shampoo designed for your dog’s coat and skin needs.

🐶 Breed of the Month: Border Collie

💬 Bottom line: Healthy paws keep your dog active, comfortable, and ready for summer fun. With the right care — at home and in the salon — you can prevent pain and keep those tails wagging.
